Hart Dad
The 90 season had a few weird things go down. First off Hart lost to Canyon after Canyon picked off a pitch pass on the one yard line late in the game. Hart beat eventual division 1 finalist Quartz Hill that year with a 46 yard field goal in tornado like winds at QH. Hart's loss in league came on a 97 yard TD pass, on third and 9, with just over 2 minutes left in the game. Hart lost to Esperanza with Esperanza scoring from the ten yard line with no timeouts left and only 3 ticks left as the TE crossed the goalline. That '91 class had 8 players who went on to play college football the total number of D-1 players ended up at 5 with the possible sixth being rated the top ranked TE in the country and then quiting football before accepting a scholarship out of JC claiming he was burnt out. The possible seventh player D 1 player had multiple D1 offers out of JC, but was injured in his bowl game and the offers were pulled back and he played 1AA. Pretty athletic team, but was seriously lacking depth at virtually every position. The roster only contained 38 players.

Howard Blackwell was the first player to score 5 touchdowns(3 rushing, 2 receiving) in a single game against San Gabriel in 1989.

And for more possible info on Blackwell(record or not), in the 1989 game against Saugus he received the ball just 3 times(from passes) in the first quarter totaling 188 yards, all for touchdowns(50, 57, and 81 yards respectively).

Blackwell had 3 receiving touchdowns against Saugus in 1989(so I guess he should be included in the TD receptions in a game record).

Also, Hart scored 49 points in '89' before halftime against Burbank. It got so bad that the refs issued a running clock midway through the second quarter.

I'll have to look at Howard Blackwell's achievements more closely.

I know he was one of the better backs to play at Hart. I've looked at the Daily News for that era but not the Signal which, back in those days, tended to have fairly complete coverage.

Finding ACCURATE information is proving very difficult for some eras. At this point, I've collected, but not post info on all the games in the 60s that I can find. The problem is that the Signal simply didn't report the scores for many of the games in the early 60s. I've looked at some of the yearbooks but they have proven to be somewhat of an untrustworthy source as they too often conflict with the newspaper account written at the time.

The 1989 team is probably the best team at Hart not to win CIF.
They were the first freshman team to go 10-0 in 1986(it would take 16 years for another team to accomplish this). They were the last and most productive JV squad under the Herringtons to go 10-0 in 1987 averaging just under 47 points a game.

It all got screwed up when Carson was hired over the Herringtons. The junior class had not lost a football game since Pop Warner and was determined to go 48-0 in high school. If the Herringtons were hired in '88' I have no doubt that an undefeated season would have happened. The seniors that year also played under the Herringtons and completely trusted them.

Hiring an outsider in Dave Carson was a huge mistake, and in my opinion, cost Hart at least 2 to 3 CIF titles. Dave Carson wasn't fired until mid-way through summer in '89'. That team had no head coach for a lot of the passing league games, they had no idea who was going to be their coach for weeks! The Herringtons were finally hired right before 2 a-days(hell-week). But the damage was already done. A Hart squad that had never lost a game lost 5 in one year under Carson. Even though the '89' team went 10-2 and was considered a sucessful season and got Hart football all kinds of recognition and the Daily News Player of the year(Howard Blackwell), it was still a let down.

Quick correction. Blackwell scored 5 touchdowns against San Gabriel in '89', which would make him the first to score 5 TD's in a game(Signal Sports 11/10/89).

Check the records section on the Hartdad site. I've Howard Blackwell's five TD performance.

If you know of others that should be there and the source for the info.

FYI -- I would LOVE to get copies of game programs or better yet banquet programs for any season you or any other reader might have.

As a note Deriek Charles and Joey Charles are the only two brothers to win the San Fernando /Santa Clarita Valley L.A. Times Player of The Year Awards, selected by the Valley sports writers. Deriek Charles accomplishments are worthy of more review, such as a lateral pass fom Delmatoff in which Charles ran it out of the end zone for 102 yds. Deriek also played professionally in the Arena League (Peoria Pirates) for one year, befrore leaving footballas an active player.
